Ovarian Cancer

At one time, doctors were in general agreement that birth control pills (BCP’s) offered women some protection women against ovarian cancer.  Early studies showed BCP’s actually reduced their risk of getting this disease.  Some studies even showed dramatic reductions, even after 10 years of use.

However, those findings have since fallen by the wayside. Recent studies, primarily in post-menopausal women taking synthetic, chemically altered hormone replacement therapy (HRT), showed opposite results.

Prolonged Estrogen Use Causes Uterine and Ovarian Cancers

It’s been known for some time that prolonged use of estrogens, without the balance of a progestin hormone, can cause significant uterine growth and uterine endometrial cancer.  The same was observed for ovarian cancer.

Traditional Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) using only estrogen showed a significantly higher risk of ovarian cancer - by a dramatic 60%.  This massive increase surprised many investigators.  Although they knew estrogen alone was a problem, they didn’t expect it to exert this much of an effect.

But Estrogen + Progestin Has Also Increased Ovarian Cancer Risk

Even women using estrogen coupled with a progestin had a slight increase risk of ovarian cancer, by an additional 10%.  This astonished investigators so much it called into question the prior results about the protective effects of a combined estrogen and progestin hormone replacement therapy.

BCP’s Use the Same Estrogen + Progestin Altered Hormones

Oral contraceptives use a combination of estrogen plus progestin.  In the past, it was thought the progestin component reduced the chance of ovarian cancer, even in younger women.  However, with the release of the newer studies from the Women’s Health Initiative in 2002, all of the previously touted beneficial effects of BCP’s on ovarian cancer have now been called into doubt.

Do Younger Women Face the Same Risks?

The conclusions reached about the increased risk of ovarian cancer were made in older women taking HRT.  Advocates of the safety of BCP’s continue to point to the earlier studies of the protective effects on ovarian cancer in younger women.

Unfortunately, several generations of women that took BCP’s at a younger age are now moving into the age category where ovarian cancer becomes more frequent.  Only when this category of women is factored into the equation will we really know the true effect of BCP’s upon ovarian cancer.

Prediction:  BCP’s Increase Risk of Ovarian Cancer

Don’t be surprised when the medical society changes their minds once again, realizing that BCP’s are actually harmful, not protective, when it comes to ovarian cancer. Just like all the occasions the medical society has done an “about face” on many other so-called “benefits” of the Pill.

Time will tell.
